Hi everyone,
I’m excited to join this forum and connect with others who enjoy the Altair 8800 Mini. It’s amazing how this small machine captures the spirit of early personal computing—those switches and blinking LEDs never get old.
I’m here to:
Learn more about operating the front panel
Explore classic software like Altair BASIC
Share build experiences and tips
See what creative projects others are doing
If you have any advice for getting the most out of the Altair 8800 Mini—or favorite programs to try—I’d love to hear them.
Looking forward to learning and tinkering together.
Happy blinking! ??️
Welcome! The Altair 8800 Mini is a great way to experience early computing without dealing with fragile vintage hardware. Even though it’s a modern recreation, the front panel works very much like the original—so learning to use the switches and LEDs really helps you understand how early computers operated at the hardware level.
If you’re just getting started, I’d recommend:
Trying a simple front-panel LED test program first
Loading Altair BASIC and running a few sample programs
Reading the original Altair 8800 manuals—they still apply conceptually
Don’t worry if it feels slow or confusing at first. That’s part of the charm, and it clicks pretty quickly once you get hands-on. If you run into issues, post photos or details—people here are usually happy to help.
Enjoy the blinking lights! ?
